Use of Patient Data by HSCIC04/09/2013
We have recently received a number of enquiries from patients concerned about a new system that allows the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HCSIC) to access patient data from GP Practice records. The programme is called 'Care.Data'.
The programme will operate through the GP Extraction Service, or GPES. This system does not come into operation for another 8 weeks. During that 8 weeks, GP Surgeries have been told that they must take reasonable steps to let patients know about the changes, so that they can choose to 'opt out' from the system if they so choose.
We only received an update on the system and our role in advising patients about it late last week, and are currently awaiting the arrival of some posters and leaflets explaining more about the system. This information will also be posted on our website as soon as it is available. If patients have already decided that they would like to opt out of the system, please write to the practice for the attention of the Practice Manager, and your records will be amended accordingly. For reasons of patient confidentiality, we are currently unable to accept requests via e-mail, but are asking for confirmation if this is acceptable. We will update our guidance on this issue as soon as possible.
In the meantime, patients can visit this website for further information about the programme.
Further information will be posted here as soon as it is available.
